Use Articles to Build Your Mailing List – Mentoring Monday

Monday, February 11th, 2008

You’ve probably heard the saying, “The money is in the list.” To make money online, you need to have a list of people who are interested in your product or service and who want you to keep in regualar contact with them.

Sounds good, but how can you build that list when you’re just starting an online business?

One of the best ways to build your list is by writing and submitting articles.

To use this technique, simply write and submit articles on your topic of expertise to popular article directories where ezine publishers and readers are looking for the information you provide.

This is called article marketing, and it’s a very valuable tool; you are actually proving your worth and demonstrating your expertise through the articles you write.

So how can article marketing help build your mailing list too?

The answer is in the resource box you submit along with your articles. In your resource box (also called the author’s bio), include a brief detail about yourself and your business, along with an active link to your website.

If you want to focus on building your list with your articles, the link in your resource box should be to your mailing list’s landing page. There you can capture your visitor’s name and email address, which will in turn help you build your mailing list at no cost.

If your articles are well-written and worth sharing, ezine publishers and bloggers will republish your articles together with your resource box for their readers and subscribers, so even more potential subscribers will be exposed to your article.

WAHM Articles’ author Terri Seymour uses this technique very effectively. Here is the resource box she includes with each of her articles:

Terri Seymour has several years online experience and has helped many people start their own business. Visit her site at www.seymourproducts.com for help, resources, support and more. Seymour Products also offers resell ebooks for $1 each, free affiliate programs and a free weekly ezine. mailto:[email protected]

Each of her articles provides informative and well-written content that publishers and readers value, so you’ll find her articles reprinted on many websites and blogs.

You can start building your own list today by writing and submitting your articles to trusted article submission sites such as WAHM Articles.

Magic Formula for Effective Article Marketing – Mentoring Monday

Monday, February 4th, 2008

This morning the kids and I went on a homeschool tour of a local radio station. That was a fun way to start a new week!

Part of the tour was with the DJ, helping her read the weather forecast on-air, and watching how she uses a computer to schedule the songs.

The second part of the tour was in the sales department. The sales manager explained it this way: The sound booth is the heart of the radio station. The sales department is its arms, legs, and feet.

It’s the sales department that has to get out there, research the market, and then come up with radio ads that will help the advertisers get their message out to the audience.

The magic formula of good advertising, he explained, is the right message, delivered to the right people, and delivered frequently.

I smiled when he said that, because those are the same ingredients that make article marketing so powerful:

1. The right message.

In an article, the message is informative content that your potential client is looking for.

2. The right people

Write about the information you target market is looking for, and your audience will find you.

3. Frequency

This is often the missing ingredient in article marketing campaigns. One, two, or even 10 articles may not be enough for your audience to hear your message. But deliver your message regularly and frequently, and soon your audience will hear what you want to tell them.

Stress Management Tips for Moms – Mentoring Monday

Monday, January 28th, 2008

Today’s Mentoring Monday is from Aurelia Williams of Real Life Coaching. This week’s tip isn’t about writing articles, but about managing your stress better, so you can be a better mom, business owner, and article marketer! Aurelia Williams is a personal coach and the author of Journey To Joy , an inspiring eBook that explores many obstacles that women face.

Stress Management Tips for Moms by Aurelia Williams

Let’s face it, every mom has had one of “those days”. The baby is feed and dry but very fussy, your child forgot to tell you about a science project that is due tomorrow and hands you a list of 10 things that you must get from the store, you forgot the roast in the oven and now it is dry and your husband just called to say that he is stuck at the office… again! After a day like this, it can be very hard to keep your stress level low. With each passing minute you may feel your stress and irritability rising, your patience getting shorter and your fuse about to blow! Calgon Take Me Away!!

When you feel the need to escape and take a few minutes to yourself to de-stress, follow some (if not all) of the tips below.

Put yourself in time out Allow some alone time for yourself. Use this time to focus on you. Find a place in your home that you can go to and find privacy. You can ask your partner or a friend to take the family out for a few hours while you enjoy your alone time. Do nothing, sleep, read, watch a movie, and just enjoy your solitude.

Call a friend Rather than yelling at your husband or your children, try picking up the phone and vent to a friend. Be sure not to vent AT her, but rather tell her about your day and get it all out. If she offers you some advice, listen and soak it in. This mini-time out session will leave you feeling heard, de-stressed and you will find that by the end of your call some of you anger will have dissipated.

Play As adults, we sometimes forget the beneficial value of play. Play stimulates our imagination, encourages our creativity, boosts our energy, and best of all, it is fun. Try a game of tennis, a game of cards online or perhaps invite some friends over for an evening of adult board games.

Meditate Meditation has been proven to reduce your blood pressure, and helps to dramatically reduce your stress level. Meditation and/or prayer will help you to keep in touch with your spiritual side. Meditation is a very effective method of relaxation. To meditate, quiet your mind and allow yourself to focus on one thing, such as your breath. Find a relaxed comfortable position where Try visualizing good health and peace as you inhale. While you are breathing out breathe out all of your stress. Set aside approximately 20 minutes for this exercise. Upon completion, you will see just how much more relaxed your mind and body is.

Take a nap Find a quiet, comfortable spot and take a nap. Even a short power nap can leave you feeling refreshed, renewed, and more focused. Studies have shown that people who spent 30 minutes each day napping had one third less heart disease than those who didn’t nap.

Eat Not just anything but certain things. Studies show that certain foods can help reduce stress. Carbohydrates will actually soothe you. Good sources of carbohydrates include rice, pasta, potatoes, breads, air-popped popcorn and low-calorie cookies. Experts suggest that the carbohydrates present in just one baked potato or a cup of spaghetti or white rice, is enough to relieve the anxiety of a stressful day.

Movie Time If you don’t have anyone to watch the children for you while you de-stress. Put in one of their favorite movies, supply your children with a few healthy snacks, and have them occupy themselves for a little while so that you can take a breather.

Don’t feel guilty for taking time out to rejuvenate your mind and body. Being a mom is not an easy task and it is a full time job. Take a break when you need it and be sure to ask for help to keep the stress at bay.

Mentoring Monday: The Very Best Way to Find Writing Ideas

Monday, December 24th, 2007

It’s happened to you too, hasn’t it?

You need to write an article, a blog post, or an editorial for your newsletter. So, you sit down at the keyboard and….

Nothing.

The very best way I’ve found to always have a new idea ready when I need one is, strangely enough, to do nothing at all.

Nothing work-related, anyways.

Ideas are funny things, aren’t they? They kind of float around in your head for a while, and then poof! They disappear. And they’re never, ever around when you actually need them.

But I have discovered the secret to always finding an idea when I need one. When I’m desperate for an idea and there are none to be found, I take a break and walk the dog, play piano, vacuum, read a book – anything not relating to my work.

Then, when I least expect it (and when I’m farthest away from pen and paper) I suddenly find more ideas than I know what to do with!

This is why I’ve gotten into the habit of always keeping pen and paper nearby.

This is also why I’ve gotten into the habit of not working on weekends and taking regular holidays. When I come back to work, I’m full of ideas that keep my going for the next several weeks.

So, if you’re short on ideas, take this Christmas holiday as an opportunity to let your mind wander far, far away from your everyday work, and let yourself be inundated with new article ideas.

An Easy Way to Write Articles That Make Good Ideas Sound Even Better

Monday, December 17th, 2007

It really doesn’t take much to write an article that your target audience will enjoy reading. You just need to know what information your readers are looking for and be able to string a few words together (about 500 or so).

On this Mentoring Monday, however, I would like to introduce you to one really easy way to make those good ideas sound even better.

Have you heard of transition words? They don’t add much information to your article, but they help join your ideas together so that your sentences, and ultimately your article, will read much more smoothly.

While you don’t want your online text to LOOK smooth (think chunky peanut butter) you also don’t want your article to sound disjointed or you could lose an impatient reader. Transitions help connect one idea to another, so your readers can read more quickly.

Here are some examples of transition words:

and
moreover
furthermore
also
then
next
in
addition
similarly
as well
first
second
third
next
but
on the other hand
unlike
instead of
in contrast
however
now
for instance
that is
in this
case
thus
in fact
such
for example
accordingly
therefore
in conclusion
thus
as a result
to sum up
at last
consequently
finally
so

So, the next time you write an article, experiment with using transition words. First, write the article as you normally would and read it through. Then, add transition words where appropriate and read your article through again. You’ll be pleased at how much better your article reads with a few transition words thrown in.

Mentoring Monday: Write Articles That Promote Your Products

Monday, December 10th, 2007

One question I’m often asked about article marketing is this: How can I write articles that promote my product?

It’s usually asked by people who make jewellery, crafts, or the like. While it may not be immediately obvious, there are several ways you can write articles about your product in a way that your readers will be interested on buying from you when they click on your link.

Use your articles to presell your product. Establish yourself as an expert about your product and make your readers like and trust you. Give them information that will help them make good decisions about purchasing a product like the one you create.

For example, let’s say I have a craft business and make blue widgets.

Here are some examples of articles I could write to market my product:

1. The history of blue widgets
2. How to make a blue widgets
3. How to care for a handmade blue widgets
4. Things to consider when buying a blue widget
5. How to choose the right blue widget for a gift
6. How to accessorize with a blue widget
7. How to spot a quality blue widget

In your resource box, tell the reader that you create blue widgets, and invite her to your website to learn more about them or to find the right one for her needs.

If you have given her useful information in the article, there is a better chance she will click through your link and visit your website.

Mentoring Monday: Is Your Niche Narrow Enough?

Monday, October 15th, 2007

Getting our two kids to agree on anything is practically IMPOSSIBLE.

For example, should we go to McDonald’s or Burger King this weekend?

Inevitably, one wants McD’s, and the other will eat nothing less than a Double Whopper and the King’s rings.

Should we play a board game or rent a video tonight?

One wants yet another round of Cat-Opoly, and the other, Pirates of the Caribbean 2 for the umpteenth time.

Although our kids have many things in common (same parents, same house, they both have a pet cat) they each have different goals and motivators.

If I really want to meet my daughter’s unique needs, I probably can’t meet my son’s at the same time, and vice versa. Keeping both kids happy takes a lot of time and energy!

A niche can be something like that.

If your target market is too large, you simply won’t be able to meet its members’ unique needs as well as you would like, or perhaps should. They may have some things in common, but any large group will have more diversity in their goals, their motivating factors, and just how they like to work.

Satisifying the needs of a large target market can look like me trying to make both my kids happy at the same time – a crazy person trying to complete a near-impossible task.

While family is family (and I really wouldn’t want it any other way) your business shouldn’t be like this. Your niche should be narrow enough that you can make the entire group happy and meet their needs as a group.

According to the WAHM-Articles Coaching Expert, Cristina Favreau, here are some questions you can ask yourself to help you narrow down your niche:

  • Do I know and understand this target market on all levels?
  • Does this target group really need what I have to offer?
  • Do I offer solutions specific to their needs, challenges, issues, problems?

Once you choose your niche, writing articles that speak to your target market will be easier too. You will know exactly what they’re looking for and give them the information they need to reach their goals.

And if your target market includes work-at-home moms, remember to submit your WAHM articles at WAHM-Articles.com. We have the audience you’re looking for.
