How To Make A Pumpkin Crunch Dessert Cake

Saturday, November 17th, 2012

During the months of October and November, my family really enjoys this Pumpkin Crunch dessert recipe. It takes about 10 minutes to prepare and 50 minutes to bake.

This is a really nice dessert to serve at your Halloween parties or after your Thanksgiving holiday meal. I often entertain here at my home during the fall months, so I will make this recipe and serve it with some wonderful fall flavored teas and coffees.

If desired, you can substitute the canned pumpkin with some fresh puree, although when I substitute, I also add in 1 teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice to give it additional flavor.

Pumpkin Crunch Recipe

1 (15 oz.) can pumpkin puree
1 (12 oz.) can evaporated milk
3 large eggs
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 box yellow cake mix
1/2 cup pecans, chopped
1 cup butter, melted
non-dairy whipped topping for garnishing

Preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease bottom of 9 x 13″ pan.

Thanksgiving Hand Print Turkey Craft

Sunday, November 11th, 2012

These hand print turkeys are an easy craft for your kids to make for Thanksgiving. They are easy enough for toddlers and preschoolers to help make, but even older children will enjoy tracing around their hands to make this fun turkey craft.

Supplies needed:

Brown felt
Colorful craft feathers
Google eye
Red pipe cleaner
Scissors
Black permanent marker
Rubber cement or craft glue

We chose to make our turkeys out of brown felt. This is just one of many options, you could also use brown craft foam or brown construction paper.

First, use the black permanent marker to trace around your child’s hand on the brown felt. Next cut out the hand tracing. For younger children, you will have to do these steps for them.

Next turn over the piece of the felt so any permanent marker markings are on the backside of the felt.

5 Tips to a Safe Halloween

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2012

Halloween is fast approaching and that means you’ll see a lot of children roaming the streets that night. They’ll mainly be on the sidewalks and grassy areas, but they’ll have to cross the streets as well. If you have children you know how scary it can be to let them go out after dark even if you’re with them. Here are a few tips to help you keep them safe while trick or treating.

1. Bring a flashlight with you and have it on when you go from house to house. Not only will this help you to see where you’re going, but it will also tell others you’re on the sidewalk. This will keep you safe while walking and when crossing the street.

2. It’s best if you go to houses you know rather than those that are strangers. When you know the homeowners you’ll know the treats your children are getting will be safe and you won’t worry about it being poisoned.

3. If you treat or treat at homes you don’t know it’s best to have your candy checked out before you let your children eat it. Most fire stations or medical facilities offer candy screenings on Halloween or the day after.

4. If your community offers an indoor place to go trick or treating it may be a good idea. Not only is this option best if the weather is bad, but it also means the candy will be safe for your children to eat. These are generally done at malls, so you know it’ll be safe.

Safe and Healthy Trick or Treating Tips

Wednesday, October 17th, 2012

Hearing the crunch of brightly colored leaves beneath our feet and the feel of a slight brisker air is a sure sign of my favorite season. I love seeing all the warm colored foliage that garnish the trees and also just taking in that fresh, crisp scent of fall.

Packaged candies, spooky costumes, and jack-o-lanterns will soon by festively lining the shelves of all the stores. Halloween is such a fun and happy time for kids. A fun time to get dressed up and scrounge for free candy. Would you like some ideas that could combine safety and good health along with all the fun for your children?

I have a few tips here you may be looking for

Top Four Safety Tips

* Give your children boundaries of where it is safe to go trick or treating. Limit them to houses with people you know and trust.

* Always have an older sibling or an adult for your child’s escort to go along trick or treating. The best escort they can have is of course you.

* Tell your children to refrain from going to houses without a porch light on.

* Firmly tell your children not to eat any of the goodies until they get home and you have had ample time to inspect. Carefully check your child’s bag of goodies before consuming. Look out for any tears or holes in the packaging, or any discoloration. If you find any suspicious tampered candy at all, it’s always best to throw it out.

My Husband: The Super Champ of Dads

Sunday, June 17th, 2012

I have to admit it. As a mom, I hide in the bathroom to get a few quiet minutes away from my toddler and baby. But my husband has never hid in the bathroom or anywhere else for that matter. When it comes to parenting, he’s fully engaged and relentless.

When we were dating and starry-eyed, I could already see that James would be a great father. One day, we were picnicking and he asked me what I thought about having a dozen kids. I thought for sure he was joking, but he pressed the question. As an only child, I thought that was about 10 kids more than I could handle. Now after seeing how my husband cares for our two kids with boundless energy and affection, I guess he might be able to handle a dozen!

When my 18-month-old girl stands up in her crib and screams, I send in the big guns. My husband walks in there and chops her down like a fallen tree. He tells her sternly, “Go to sleep,” and like magic, she lays there, quiet as a mouse.

When my 3-year-old boy is stomping because he didn’t get his way, my husband doesn’t disengage and leave the parenting to mom. No way – he’s ready for the opportunity to teach and correct. One of his mottos is, “Don’t wait, create!” At home, my husband puts our kids through the paces, teaching them to “hold hands with daddy,” “give that back to daddy,” “stop” and “go.” Because of my husband’s training, I’ve never had to endure a tantrum at Target or fear my toddler breaking free from my grasp in a parking lot.

Not only is my husband a great trainer, he knows how to have a good time. In the evening when I’m sitting at the computer, I’ll look down to see a huge comforter moving towards me very slowly, with little giggles underneath it. When the creatures underneath are within striking distance, the comforter flips up to reveal my husband and our little kids, ready to tickle me.

For Mothers of Infants

Thank you Lord,
For my baby’s sweet smile,
It fills my heart with joy.

Thank you Lord,
For her tiny fingers,
They warm my heart with love.

Thank you Lord,
For my babies cries,
That I might fill their every need.

Thank you Lord,
For being with me,
All night, as well as through the day.

For helping me,
To be the mom,
You both have faith in me to be.

.Amen

For Mothers of Toddlers

Help me Lord to lend a hand,
That guides my baby’s way.
That each new word and each new step,
Will enrich my baby’s day.

Help me Lord to teach my son,
Right from wrong your way.
With a loving voice and gentle hand,
That will encourage his every day.

Help me Lord to share your name,
With him every night and day.
So he will know your love from the start,
And grow closer to you every day.

Amen

Cardmaking: Quick and Easy Handmade Easter Greeting Card Ideas

Friday, April 6th, 2012

Are you looking for some quick, easy and affordable handmade Easter greeting card ideas? If so, I have two greeting card designs that I would like to share with you today. This project would be great to make with older children, scouting troops, church youth groups, paper craft groups and with school groups.

We made these cards with 10-14 year old girls for them to give to their parents for Easter. Once they were done making them they were very proud of their creations. If you don’t own a Cricut Die Cutting Machine (used to cut the ovals and lettering) you can hand draw and cut out various sized oval shapes and you can purchase letter stickers at your local arts and crafts store. We used the Cricut George and Basic Shapes Cartridge for these projects.

Supplies Needed:

4″ by 5″ blank cardstock note cards with envelopes
various scrapbooking papers (prints and solids)
decorative edge scissors and regular edge scissors
adhesives – glue dots, glue sticks and glue pens
various colored scrapbooking fine tip markers and pens
*optional ink pads and Easter sentiments rubber stamps

For these 2 designs we also used self-stick plastic scrapbooking mesh in mint green and 4 mm round self-stick purple rhinestones.

For Card Number One:
