Words Your Catalogs Should Have

By: Janice Jenkins

Catalog printing is almost like your print brochure – you have numerous products and services listed in your print catalog with short descriptions. The difference is that most of the time, your catalogs also list the price for each product. Your main purpose then when creating your catalog printing is to get people to order your product or avail of your service by having them call you or fill out an order form included in the catalog.

Consumers just love to browse a print catalog. In addition to the pictures and images, your content is what makes your readers want to spend time getting to know your product or service. Your writing therefore should help your target clients evolve from regular readers to potential buyers. To give your readers a more compelling reason to read your copy and eventually make a purchase, here is what you can do:

Provide a catchy headline.
A snappy headline always gets your readers to stop and read more of what you have to offer. Often, a couple of words will help you snag that important client. In order to draw attention to your headline, use both upper and lower case in your text. ALL CAPS get lower response so avoid them totally.

On the other hand, avoid writing your product description in the headline. You have enough space inside your print catalog to leave your headline space for something worth interesting to your target clients. Hence, keep your text lines short and snappy.

Provide complete facts.
The catalog printing goal is to get your readers to order and buy from you. They either should fill up an enclosed order form or to call your customer service agent to directly order your product. Your descriptions therefore should have all the facts needed by your readers to help them make a buying decision.

But remember to have brief and concise copy even if you are providing complete descriptions of your products. The words should be enough to give the essential qualities that would help them decide to purchase.

Provide enough space for your customers.
In addition to having a simple overall design, you should also design your order form that makes it easy for your target clients to fill it out, with enough space to write their information.

Similarly, provide more space for your bestselling products and place the lesser-selling ones at the back. You do not have to provide equal footing when it comes to your products and services. What gets more attention should be given more space as well as placed close to the front. This way, your readers can easily find them and order them right away.

Finally, remember to include your contact information in every page if you can. The main goal is to have them contact you to purchase your product. How can you make a sale if they have to flip through your pages before they can even have your number? The time to look for your contact information is time and opportunity lost to make that sale.
