Top Tips For Dealing With Holiday Stress

By: Darlyn Burkle

Holidays can be a lot of fun, and an exciting experience when you are actually on one, but planning, packing, and getting to the airport on time can be quite stressful. The goal of a holiday is usually to relax, and escape from stress, so ideally a holiday should be a relaxing experience. These small tips will help you to make your holiday a more enjoyable, and less stressful experience, by highlighting the parts that are often the most stressful, so that you can plan around, or avoid them.

The Main Trigger Points

There are three trigger points that tend to cause holiday stress and depression in the majority of sufferers. These points are relationships, finances, and physical demands.

Relationships can cause stress because of conflicts and misunderstandings,. During holidays it is common for differences in personalities, needs, and interests to be highlighted, and things that are not normally an issue in day to day life can become stressful during holiday periods.

For may people, finances may threaten to become a serious issue during holidays. Running on credit cards to cover excessive expenses on gifts, travel, food and entertainment during holiday season will cause stress. The effects of the stress and worry over these vacation debts may affect you profoundly even after coming back from holidays.

Holidays can take a toll physically too - rushing around to see all the sights, carrying heavy bags, or going to an environment much hotter or colder than you are used to call all have an effect on your body.

If you want to avoid holiday stress, you should be aware of the three main trigger points, and plan accordingly.

Realistic Plans

One of the most effective ways to reduce stress is to make realistic plans. If you are planning a holiday with your family, discuss their desires and come up with a plan that everyone will enjoy. Emphasize the budget you have available and make sure that everyone understands what you can afford so that you can come up with a plan that makes everyone happy. Work out a budget for while you are there too, and stick to it so that you can avoid running out of money part way through the holiday.

Start Planning Early

Try to avoid last minute arrangements whenever possible, as these can be quite stressful. Book your tickets early if you can, and research to find the best hotel and transport deals you can. Start packing early so that you can make sure that everything you want to take is working and in good condition. Pack things you are unlikely to use at home, such as swimsuits and travel cosmetics, as soon as possible so that you know that they are packed, and have time to buy replacements if you need to.
