Work-at-home-moms (WAHM) have many different responsibilities. They are the working woman, the mom, the housekeeper, the errand runner, and the chief cook. If you are one of those WAHMs who has to take on many different roles, it can be challenging to set the limits and boundaries of your time. One of the easiest and most creative ways to do it is to, literally, put on your work hat. Choosing a Work Hat A work hat can be any hat that you want. You should only have one hat for working, but you can have other hats for your other roles during the day. For example, you may want to have a chef's hat for when you are in meal preparation mode, so that your family knows what you are focused on doing. It may seem silly to wear a hat around your own home, but the visual reminder to your family about what role you are playing will help keep them focused and help you be more effective at whatever task you are undertaking. A work hat should be one that is comfortable for you wear all year round. It should not be big and bulky, as that will distract you from work. Instead, choose a hat that is either serious and professional or fun and whimsical. If your family has trouble remembering which hat is which, you may even want to create a small sign that says "Work" and pin it to the hat. What the Hat Does Once you have your work hat chosen, every time you are ready to work put the hat on. This will be a clear signal to your family that they should not be asking for snacks or otherwise disturbing you while you are working. Let them know ahead of time how long you are planning on working, so that they can anticipate when they will be able to talk with you. The hat also helps you to focus by giving you a physical reminder of what you should be working on. The mere presence of the hat on your head signals that it is time to concentrate. You may find that you become so accustomed to working while wearing it that it is difficult to focus on work when it is not on. Other Uses for Hats A chef's hat for meal time and a work hat for working are just two of the many times that you can use a hat to signal a certain time of day. While you may not want to wear a taxi driver's hat while shuttling your children around to their different activities during the day, you may find that it adds some fun to the task if you put on a special baseball cap. When it is time to clean the house you can also wear a hat or bandanna. Have smaller hats for your children to wear during this time too. Just as the hat motivates you to complete a task, your children may be more motivated to clean their rooms, do their chores, and finish their homework if they have different hats. You need not buy expensive hats for each task, as you can use ones that you already own or find some inexpensive ones at the local dollar store.
