Pros And Cons Of Door Hanger Marketing

By: Janice Jenkins

Door hanger printing is really a different and unique way in promoting your business. The very nature of door hangers makes the strategy totally innovative and is something that most people should be looking into. However, not every business can benefit from printing door hangers. There are advantages and disadvantages in door hanger printing that every businessman or businesswoman should know about. Here are the pros and cons of door hanger marketing.

Door Hanger Pros

1. Alternative advertising – As mentioned above, door hangers are a good alternative for advertising. They are not your usual direct mail marketing options, and because of this, people are confused if it is your run of the mill junk mail or not. This plays to the door hangers advantage and most people will actually read the interesting message it has before deciding on what really they should do about it.

2. Easy and cheap distribution – Also, since door hangers are centered on a more local level in terms of its marketing paradigm, the distribution strategy for them is pretty easy and simple. You can just have your staff (or even just a bunch of local and willing kids) to help you put those door hangers in the neighborhood’s front doors. All you need to do is some walking and a little driving. Easy and relatively cheap.

3. Chances of multiple exposure – Now, since door hangers are not considered junk mail, it also has an increased chance of getting multiple exposures. The person who first saw it in their front door can bring it inside the house for other people to see later. Or, as is sometimes the case, they just leave it at the door for other people to see. Either way, more than one person will be seeing the door hanger.

4. Local Focus – Lastly, a door hanger is the perfect tool for a local marketing campaign. You can encourage your whole neighborhood to patronize your business by integrating some local and personal messages into the door hanger design itself. You can add some personal names into the hanger if you want to and you can make friends with your potential customers as well.

Door hanger Cons

1. Limited area of distribution – The very local focus of a door hanger marketing campaign is as much a con as it is a pro. If you want a far reaching marketing campaign that spans your whole city, county or state, then door hangers are not the most ideal tool to use. Door hanger marketing will become much too tedious and expensive if you consider distributing in larger areas.

2. No mass impact – Door hangers also lack impact when you consider a mass audience. Unlike poster printing where the main focus is on a mass audience, door hangers typically can only impact a whole household or a small building if you are lucky. If you compare the ratio of printed piece versus impact potential, posters win hands down. So if your target is a mass audience you will not get too much exposure when you use door hangers.

3. One time promotion – Lastly, door hangers can only be effective once per design. If you print the same design over and over again, the door hanger becomes common place. Eventually people might consider it as junk mail. So you may need to print new ones every so often to keep your door hangers from getting old. This might be an expensive process if you do not do it right.

So, do you print door hangers or not? It is really your decision, but as with most experiences, it pays if you try it just once. So decide wisely.
