Easy Games to Play at Baby Showers

By: Rachel Paxton

If you are planning a baby shower, you will of course want to find the perfect baby shower games to play. There are lots of easy, fun games to choose from, but I've chosen just a few to get you started. And remember, not everyone likes to play every kind of game. Some people prefer "word" games, and some prefer "action" type games, so try to choose a couple to please both kinds of people. Keep the games easy and simple, and everyone will be sure to have a great time.

Baby Name Scramble

If the mother-to-be has a name picked out for her baby, this is a fun word game your guests can play. Have the baby's first, middle, and last name spelled out at the top of a piece of paper, and have the guests use the letters of the baby's name to create new words. Whoever comes up with the most words in 60 seconds wins. A variation of this game is to use each letter of baby's name to create new baby names. If the baby is a boy, have them think of new baby boy names with each letter of the name. Whoever comes up with the most names that no one else thought of wins.

Baby Item Tray

This game will test the memories of your guests. Set out on a tray a variety of baby items, such as a bottle, pacifier, thermometer, diaper rash creme, diaper, rattle, nail clippers, bib, burb cloth, baby spoon, baby comb, etc. Pass the tray around so everyone can take a quick look at it. Put the tray in another room and give your guests 60 seconds to write as many things as they can remember from the tray. Whoever remembers the most items wins. Give the items on the tray to the mom-to-be as a baby gift. Hint: if you use a basket instead of a tray, your guests will have a harder time remembering the locations of the items in the basket.

Nursery Rhyme Game

This game is really fun. Dig out an old book of Mother Goose nursery rhymes and pick out a couple well known and not so well known nursery rhymes. Type them up and leave out a couple of words here and there for your guests to fill in the blanks. Here are a couple of examples:

Little Miss Muffet
Sat on her _________
Eating her _________ and whey
Along came a spider and sat down beside her
and frightened Miss Muffet away

Little Boy Blue
Come blow your ________
the _________'s in the meadow
the _________'s in the corn
where is the boy who looks after the sheep?
he's under the _________, fast asleep

Whoever fills in the most blanks wins. Give your guests one point for each blank they fill in. It sounds easy, but you wouldn't believe how many people don't know their nursery rhymes! Make sure to include at least one hard one to fool people.

Safety Pin Game

The safety pin game always causes a lot of excitement at baby showers. When your guests arrive, give each one three safety pins to pin on their shirts. After everyone gets there explain that there are certain words they are not allowed to say during the baby shower, such as "baby", "sleep", "crying", "diapers", etc. If someone is caught saying one of those words, whoever hears them first gets to walk over to them and take one of their safety pins. Whoever ends up with the most safety pins at the end of the baby shower wins.

Measure Mom's Belly

Make sure to ask the mom-to-be's permission before you play this game. If she is willing to go along with the game, have the guests guess the measurement of her pregnant belly. This game is really fun, you will get some really funny guesses. After everyone guesses have the mom-to-be stand in the middle of the circle and measure her belly to see who had the closest measurement.

Whatever games you decide to play at your baby shower, keep it simple. The games are just ice breakers to help people get to know each other so everyone feels comfortable being there. After the games is a good time for the mom-to-be to open up her gifts.
