When it comes to spending quality time with your family, there are many things that you can do that are free or low cost. The following ideas are both in-home and out-of-the home ideas. 1. Game Night - Pick one night a week or one night every 2 weeks and plan a family game night. Children love to play board games and cards with their parents. If you are looking to do this in a frugal manner, borrow games from family and friends or hit up some yard sales to save money. 2. Puzzle Time - We like to set up a card table in our family room and build a large 1,000 piece puzzle. We can pick puzzles up for $1.00 at local area yard sales. We will let the table and puzzle up for 2-3 weeks until it is completed. 3. Movie Night - Once a week, we like to plan a family movie night. We go all out with big bowls of popcorn, chips, candy and drinks. We take turns picking out PG rated movies to watch. 4. Hiking - Get outdoors and enjoy some hiking or family walks. This is great exercise for the entire family. On your walks you can collect things you find along the way and once you get home, place those found items into a large glass container. We picked up a large glass bowl and keep it on top of the mantle in our family room. 5. Bike Riding - Another great outdoors activity to get the entire family some exercise. You can ride bikes through your neighborhood or head to your local neighborhood park. 6. Free State Museums - A lot of state operated museums have free or low cost admissions. Plan an afternoon and spend some quality time visiting your local museum. 7. Kite Flying - Head to your local discount department store and spend $15 buying a few inexpensive kites. Plan an afternoon during summer seasonal weather and spend some time outdoors flying some colorful kites. 8. Backyard Games - During the summer, we like to spend time outdoors in our backyard playing badminton, volleyball, bocce ball and ring toss games. If you are on a tight budget, look for these games at local yard sales and flea markets. 9. A Family Picnic - Plan a family picnic at your local city or state park. Pack up a cooler or picnic basket with some delicious picnic-style foods. 10. Arts and Crafts Day - If the weather is ugly outside, plan an afternoon inside making some arts and crafts projects. You can find thousands of free craft project ideas online. Children love creating new things with found and purchased craft supplies. Sit down and make a list of all the things that you and your family can do together that are free or under $20.00, then spend some quality time this summer season with one another.
