As a work at home mom who is also a Christian, the most difficult part of starting my Virtual Assistant business wasn’t writing a marketing plan, setting up my first website, or even finding my first client. It was figuring out what role my faith in God should play in my new business. The answer seems obvious – of course it comes first! The tricky part was learning exactly what that should look like…

That’s why I was so thrilled to discover the new book by Jill Hart and Diana Ennen, So You Want to Be a Work at Home Mom: A Christian’s Guide to Starting a Home-Based Business. Diana’s Virtual Assistance books and Jill’s online community of Christian WAHMs had been very influential for me when I began working from home years ago. Together, Jill and Diana know everything there is to know about working from home, and they know how it all fits together with faith in God.

Every inch of starting a home business is covered in this wonderful book. Jill and Diana walk readers through choosing a business, setting it up, marketing a business, and even how to balance your family with your home business. And through it all runs the idea that for a Christian mom like me, faith in God needs to come first, in everything I do.

The information in these pages is priceless for any mom considering a work at home lifestyle. But what was most inspiring for me were the personal stories Jill and Diana share about their own work at home journeys, along with interviews with other successful business owners that are sprinkled throughout. It was encouraging to realize that these women I had admired for so long had once faced the same problems I had, and had asked the same questions.

And the most important question this book finally resolved for me, was the role my faith should play in my business. My faith in God is at the beginning, and in everything I do. Just what does that look like? Some days it’s frustrating. Some days it’s amazing. And there are days when I wonder if my hopes will ever be realized. Then I remember that God’s plans are much bigger than mine, and what He has in mind for me is greater than I could possibly imagine.

If you need encouragement in your own work at home journey, or want to know what it really takes to become a work at home mom, you will love the book, So You Want to Be a Work at Home Mom. Visit http://SoYouWantToBeAWAHM.com to learn more about the book and order your copy!

This Free Book Friday is not so free (unless you pick up a copy from your local library, like I did) but it is a must-read for everyone who markets to moms. Hint: If you’re writing WAHM articles, that would be you.

The book I’m talking about is Trillion Dollar Moms – Marketing to a New Generation of Mothers by Maria Bailey and Bonnie Ulman.

Moms are the most powerful consumers in the US – in fact, recent surveys show moms are spending more than $17 trillion annually. This book shows entrepreneurs how they can get in on this lucrative market. (If you own a home business, that’s you again.)

The authors draw on proprietary research, their own insights, and case studies to show us marketers how to promote our products effectively to moms.

For example, did you know that when you market to moms, you should plan your campaigns around the ages of their children, NOT the ages of the mothers?

That makes complete sense to me. Since becoming a mom, my choices and decisions have been majorly influenced by which stage my children are in. But ask me how that knowledge should affect my marketing, and I couldn’t tell ya.

Not to worry, Maria and Bonnie explain how to apply their insights and research to your own marketing campaigns. Here’s the link again.

My son had just turned two and had transformed into a child-sized monster before my very eyes. I mean, I had heard about the terrible twos, but I hadn’t expected this!
I told my doctor about my frustrations at our next check-up, and she recommended I read 1-2-3 Magic: Effective Discipline for Children 2-12 by Thomas W. Phelan.

I honestly didn’t believe a simple book could help us. As a former teacher, I had spent years learning child psychology and behavior management. What could one book possibly offer that I hadn’t already learned?

Fortunately for my family, that was the best medicine I’ve ever been subscribed.

Once you begin reading 1-2-3 Magic, you can apply the techniques immediately, before you finish the book. Dr. Phelan starts out by explaining why many parents can’t manage their kids’ behavior. He believes we go wrong when we try to reason with our children instead of parent them. Children, he reminds the reader again and again, are not miniature adults, and should be treated like children.

Dr. Phelan gives step-by-step guidance for every discipline that arises with young children, whether you want the child to stop a behavior or start a new one. He also gives several true-to-life examples of how the program looks when used correctly and when used incorrectly.

We’ve used this program with our two children for over 10 years, and we haven’t encountered a situation where we couldn’t apply 1-2-3 Magic, or where it didn’t work like, well, magic.

It is an inspiring story for all mothers.

This is a very courageous tale from a well-known actress. It could not be easy for her to divulge her innermost feelings about such an intimate subject, the birth of her child, but she does it candidly. Many women, whether they have suffered from postpartum depression or not, will connect with this story, as its main focus is the overwhelming demands of a newborn that no new mother can be prepared for. Continue reading…
